individual homestaysThe Individual Homestay Program is an educational and cross-cultural opportunity to live as a member of a host family in another country. The program is open to individuals and, in some countries, to couples, who are sincerely interested in the experience of immersing themselves in another culture.
You will join right in the everyday life of your hosts. Some examples of what to expect are: going to the market with your host parents, helping to cook dinner one night, and going to work with one family member to observe that aspect of their life. You might also take one day to explore their town on your own, seeking out the local specialties or your own professional counterparts. The host family provides meals, accommodations, and friendship. Read about one person's experience of a homestay in Germany.
Since you will travel independently, you are not bound by the schedule of any group. You pick the start date and the length: one, two, three, or four weeks.
There is a screening procedure in order to be accepted into the EIL program. You need to make arrangements well in advance. Prior to departure you will be notified of the host family name and address so that you can make your final transportation arrangements to their town.
Fees vary depending on the country you select and the number of weeks. They cover the administrative costs of the program including any payment of the local EIL representative and in some cases a small stipend to the host family itself to cover food, linens and the like. Travel costs are generally not included in the fees quoted for an individual homestay.
